For buildings or homes with metal roofs, it’s important to select the right metal roof and wall panels. Assuming your customers want to protect their investment, they will need to spend some time making sure the proper ventilation system has been installed. When there is optimal air movement, the temperature is regulated, there is more energy efficiency, and the risk for issues related to moisture (such as condensation) are reduced.
So why is it important to ensure proper ventilation?
- Temperature is regulated - It will prolong the life of the building and just be a more pleasant experience for your customers if they are able to regulate the temperature. If the temperature is not regulated, it can cause excess metal panel expansion as well as contraction. With this movement, the integrity of the fasteners will be weakened.
- Condensation is controlled - Condensation can be incredibly destructive for metal. It can cause reduced thermal performance of insulation, insect infestation, growth of mold and mildew, and corrosion. If you’re in an area that’s warm and humid, the outside air--if not properly ventilated--can bring with it large amounts of humidity.
- Air quality is preserved - With proper ventilation, you won’t have to worry about air pollutants that are detrimental to productivity and human health. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have published helpful information about air quality standards that can help your customers to determine ventilation needs that will need to be met.
How to Achieve Good Ventilation
Structures that are larger may require more than one kind of ventilator so that air can move between them. If a building houses animals, people, and/or valuable possessions, it may also benefit from the cross-ventilation that occurs when a louver vent is used near the structure’s floor and ridge vents are used near the roof. You may want to have your customers work with building engineers and design professionals.
Your customers will have a longer lasting metal roof if they have a properly ventilated structure. It’s important to understand how to achieve an effective ventilation system with a metal roof.
