How to Help Homeowners Choose a New Roof

As a roofing contractor, you may encounter homeowners or business owners who know they need a new roof, but they are overwhelmed by all of the options that are available. They may turn to you to get your opinion. A roof is a major purchase, and it’s important not to rush into a decision. If someone comes to you to ask about choosing a new roof, the first thing you need to do is ask them about their wants and needs.

By clearly establishing what they are looking for in a new roof, they will be able to choose the roof that is right for their business or home. Here is a list of things the homeowner or business owner should consider before making a decision.

Aesthetics

Does the homeowner need to have a roof that looks a particular way? Do they want something traditional like a shingle look or are they interested in something that looks more contemporary like standing seam?

Wind Resistance

Is the home or business in question in an area that is often impacted by high wind or hurricanes? They may be interested in a roof that offers more protection such as a metal roof with interlocking panels.

Durability

This is more important if the person intends to be in the home or business location for a decade or more. If they are interested in the durability of a roof, a metal roof is going to be an excellent option.

Energy Efficiency

If the homeowner or business owner lives or works in a hot environment or would like to conserve more energy to be more cost efficient or environmentally friendly, a metal roof with a reflective coating may be an excellent option. This can decrease summer energy costs by 20% or even more.

If you are approached with someone who is trying to decide what type of roof would be ideal for their home or business, make sure you review this list with them to determine what their requirements are.
